When discussing Jerome Abbey's debut, Matthäus Mane revealed that he gave the 16-year- old some advice and encouragement before the youngster came on as a substitute in the final Premier League match of the season. It's worth noting that Mane himself only made his Premier League debut last year, but has already secured an important position at Wolves.
The striker continued his good form against Burnley, hitting the post once and nearly turning a point earned in Turf Moor into three. Meanwhile, after his journey from academy to his first-team debut, Matthäus Mane also mentored and assisted Jerome Abbey this weekend.
With 15 minutes remaining in the game, the young midfielder came on as a substitute, setting a record as the youngest player to ever appear in the Premier League for Wolves and the second youngest player to appear in all competitions in the club's history.
When discussing the season's end in a draw, Matthäus Mane said: "Our goal before the game was of course to win, and we went into the game with the belief that we would win. But it was a very tough game, and the weather was very hot, so I think we gave it our all and fought until the very last moment."
"However, we were a bit slow to get into the game in the second half. Then the pace of the game became very open, with quick transitions between attack and defense, almost like a basketball game. But overall we did our best. I delivered a cross, and Radyslav Krejci headed the ball towards goal. I felt the ball hit his arm, so we appealed to the referee."
“We were putting pressure on the referee, and then he went to review the VAR footage and ultimately awarded a penalty. Adam Armstrong converted it, so it felt great. Penalties are part of our daily training, and it's a responsibility that strikers have to take, and it's what top strikers should do. We were all pretty sure the ball would go in, so after it went in, everyone rushed over to celebrate together immediately.”
Speaking about Jerome Abbey's first-team debut, Matthäus Mane said: "It was a very good opportunity for him. Before the game, I reminded him that he had to be ready at any time because you can never predict what will happen in a game. Sometimes the manager will choose to trust you and give you a chance, and this time was no exception. I think he performed very well after coming on as a substitute, so he deserves congratulations."
