Mazzula had previously stated publicly that "the Best Coach award is a stupid award," but his intention was not to deny the honor itself, but rather to argue that the award should belong to the entire coaching team, not an individual. After receiving the award, Mazzula reiterated this view.
“Countless late nights, away trips, game planning, video analysts editing game footage, and assistant coaches devising tactics—all of these are crucial to winning a game,” Mazzula said. “The players are of course the most important, but the entire coaching staff deserves equal credit. I regret that they are not here today, and I will always be grateful to those who are willing to sacrifice time with their families to help the team win every day.”
At 37 , Mazura became the youngest Coach of the Year winner since 1975. He will receive a trophy named after Celtic legend Red Auerbach and become the fourth manager in the club's history to receive this honor.
Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens said that Mazura successfully helped the team grow and allowed players to perform at their best in a team system when there were many unknowns.
