Tottenham Hotspur confirmed on Wednesday that Conor Gallagher has joined the club from Atletico Madrid. He will wear the number 22 jersey and will sign a contract until June 30, 2031.
For Tottenham, Gallagher's arrival will effectively fill the void left by Rodrigo Bentancur's injury. They paid a transfer fee of £34 million, ultimately beating Aston Villa, who were only willing to offer a loan deal with an option to buy.
Gallagher, 25, came through Chelsea's youth academy and transferred to Atletico Madrid in August 2024 for €42 million. To date, he has made 77 appearances for Atletico, scoring 7 goals and providing 7 assists.
Before joining Atletico Madrid, Gallagher was loaned by Chelsea to Charlton Athletic, Swansea City, West Bromwich Albion, and Crystal Palace. He finally established himself at Chelsea in the 2022/23 season, making 95 appearances for the team, contributing 10 goals and 10 assists.
Gallagher was overjoyed to return to the Premier League after two years. In a statement, he said: "I am incredibly happy and excited to join a great club and begin a new chapter in my career. I longed to be a Tottenham player, and thankfully the club shared that sentiment. The transfer process was very smooth and quick, and I am ready to step onto the pitch."
“I know how passionate Tottenham fans are, and I’m very happy to be a part of it. I hope to create special moments and memories with everyone.”
Tottenham manager Thomas Frank added: "Connor is a top-class midfielder, and we went to great lengths to bring him in. He is still young and has a lot of room for improvement, while also gaining valuable experience in the Premier League, La Liga, and the England national team."
"As a former captain, Conor will bring leadership, maturity, charisma, and personality to our dressing room. At the same time, his running ability, pressing awareness, and shooting instinct will enhance our strength in the midfield core area."
“I am really looking forward to working with him every day, and I believe the fans will love the changes he has brought to the team.”
