Paris Saint-Germain defeated Liverpool with a 0-2 (4-0 aggregate) away win the second leg of their 2025/26 Champions League quarter-final match at Anfield on Tuesday to advance to the semi-finals.
In the first half, Virgil van Dijk's close-range follow-up shot was blocked off the goal line by Marquinhos. In the second half, a controversial penalty decision, overturned by the referee after a malicious foul on Mac Allister from Pacho, foreshadowed the outcome of the match. Dembélé later scored twice, first with a long-range shot, then a close-range effort. Ultimately, Paris Saint-Germain won with a 0-2 away win against Liverpool, advancing with a dominant 4-0 aggregate score.
First Half
In the 17th minute, João Neves made an overhead horizontal pass from the right side of the box. Ousmane Dembélé quickly followed up, stopped the ball and turned around before half-volleying with his right foot from the center of the box, but his shot flew high and went out of the pitch.
In the 31st minute, Mohamed Salah crossed into the box from the right wing. Ibrahima Konaté rose high and attempted a header in the box. His effort was initially saved and cleared off not far away by Matvey Safonov. Virgil van Dijk quickly followed up and upon picking up the loose ball, took a left-footed follow-up shot from a very close distance in the box, but his shot was blocked off the line by Marquinhos! Liverpool missed a golden opportunity to pull one back!
At halftime, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain temporarily enter the break with a goalless draw.
Second Half
Both teams switched sides as the match continued. In the 49th minute, Florian Wirtz passes horizontally from from the edge of the peanlty area. Cody Gakpo quickly followed up, got the ball and took a few steps before taking a right-footed long shot from just outside the penalty area, but hi shot was saved by Safonov.
In the 64th minute, Wirtz passes horizontally from the right wing. Dominik Szoboszlai got the ball and took a few steps before taking a left-footed long shot from just outside the penalty area, but his shot was initially blocked and cleared off not far away by Neves. Upon picking up the loose ball, Alexis Mac Allister was clearly brought down by William Pacho with malicious intent. The referee immediately blew his whistle, awarding Liverpool a penalty!
However, the VAR assistant referee intervened, and after reviewing the VAR the referee suddenly ruled that Pacho's malicious tackle on Mac Allister was not a foul, thus rescinding the penalty decision. This decision immediately sparked huge controversy!
8 minutes later, Wirtz passed the ball back from the center of the box. Upon receiving the pass, Mac Allister took a right-footed long shot from just outside the penalty area. His shot was initially blocked and cleared off not far away by Warren Zaïre-Emery. After picking up the loose ball, Milos Kerkez passes horizontally from outside the box. Rio Ngumoha quickly followed up, got the ball, cuts inside and took a few steps before volleying with his right foot from the left side of the box, but his shot was saved by Safonov.
In the 73rd minute, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia passes horizontally from the attacking third. Dembélé quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass, took a left-footed long shot from just outside the penalty area which sent the ball flying straight into the bottom left corner of the net and leaving Giorgi Mamardashvili helpless. Paris Saint-Germain once again broke the deadlock first by taking a 1-0 lead (aggregate score: 3-0)!
In the second minute of stoppage time, Bradley Barcola passes horizontally from the left side of the box. Dembélé quickly followed up, got the ball and took a few steps before volleying the ball into the empty net for his second goal with his right foot past the outrushing Mamardashvili, sealing a 2-0 victory for Paris Saint-Germain (aggregate score: 4-0)!
When the final whistle is blown, Paris Saint-Germain recorded an emphatic 0-2 (aggregate score: 4-0) away win over Liverpool.
