Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike might be ruled out of the rest of the season due to a ruptured right anterior cruciate ligament..

The Athletic's resident renowned English Liverpool team correspondent James Pearce, exclusively reported on Wednesday that the club's France international striker Hugo Ekitike has ruptured his right anterior cruciate ligament, potentially ruling him out of the rest of the season.

According to Pearce's report, Ekitike suffered an injury in the first half of Tuesday's Champions League second leg match against Paris Saint-Germain, clutching his right ankle in pain before being stretchered off the pitch.

Liverpool has arranged for him to undergo an injury scan, but the team doctor has stated that initial assessments indicate the injury is very serious.

If the scans confirm this ominous prediction, Ekitike could face at least seven to eight months out, meaning that his season is over.

This also means the former Paris Saint-Germain and Eintracht Frankfurt striker will miss this summer's 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

As Ekitike the most of in-form striker other than Kylian Mbappé, Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola, and Désiré Doué, his absence will undoubtedly significantly impact France's title aspirations.

Furthermore, this means Liverpool's attacking options are becoming increasingly limited.

Sweden international striker Alexander Isak has only recently returned from injury, but his performance has been rusty due to his long absence from the pitch; he only managed five touches in the aforementioned match.

Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo are in poor form, while Federico Chiesa continues to be plagued by injuries.

This leaves the Reds' goal-scoring hopes temporarily pinned on wonderkid Rio Ngumoha.

Hugo Ekitike, 23, was born on June 20, 2002, in Reims, France. He is 1.9 meters tall and plays as a center forward. He holds dual French and Cameroonian citizenship.

Ekitike previously played for Reims, Paris Saint-Germain, and Eintracht Frankfurt before joining Liverpool in August 2025 for £85 million, becoming the club's most expensive striker after Isak and Darwin Núñez.

This season, Ekitike has made 45 appearances for the Premier League giants in all competitions, scoring 17 goals and providing 4 assists, helping the team reach the quarter-finals of both the Champions League and the FA Cup.
