After two consecutive seasons of poor form, Tottenham Hotspur defeated Everton 1-0 on the final day of the Premier League season, finishing 17th in the league and narrowly avoiding relegation.
After manager Roberto De Zerbi led the team to safety from relegation, club non-executive chairman Peter Charrington published an open letter admitting that the club had failed to prioritize footballing success in its decision-making and solemnly pledged to fully commit to rebuilding.
Last September, Daniel Levy, who had led the club for nearly 25 years, resigned, and Charrington immediately took over. Major shareholder ENIC Group also approved a comprehensive restructuring plan. In a letter to fans, Charrington bluntly pointed out that some unacceptable facts had been discovered during the restructuring process.
Charrington admitted that Tottenham's unique footballing qualities, ambitions, and bond with fans have faded, and the club not only lacks professional talent in key positions but has also failed to assemble a sufficiently good squad to cope with the fierce competition of the Premier League.
In response to fan protests and banners against management after the final match, Charrington reiterated the club's commitment to reform. He stated that Tottenham will continue to invest in the transfer market over the next few transfer windows to build a team that combines experience, youthful energy, and leadership, with this summer being a crucial first step in the rebuilding process. Simultaneously, the club will also modernize its football operations.
Charrington responded directly to rumors circulating about the club's potential ownership change. He emphasized that Tottenham will never be sold, and the Lewis family is fully committed to the club's revival.
Finally, Charrington stated that Tottenham's performance this season has fallen far short of expectations, and the future goal is for the team to be able to compete with the top Premier League teams every season.
