Union Berlin released a statement on Wednesday confirming that they have reached a contract extension agreement with 54-year-old head coach Steffen Baumgart. As is customary, neither side disclosed the contract's length or specific details.
Baumgart played for Union Berlin for two seasons, making 68 appearances, scoring 22 goals and providing 8 assists. He retired in March 2009 and subsequently coached several domestic clubs, including Magdeburg, Oberspré, AK 07 Berlin, Paderborn 07, Cologne, and Hamburg.
In January 2025, Baumgart succeeded Bo Svensson as the head coach of Union Berlin. Under his leadership, Union Berlin went from a nine-game winless streak to an eight-game unbeaten run, ultimately finishing the season in 13th place in the Bundesliga.
Union Berlin's overall performance this season has been commendable. Official data shows that they have achieved a record of 6 wins, 4 draws, and 6 losses in 16 league matches, accumulating 22 points and currently ranking 9th in the Bundesliga.
Following the signing, Horst Helter, head of Union Berlin's men's professional football department, said: "Steffen took over as manager when the team was in a slump and successfully brought stability and a clear direction to the team. The development over the past few months has proven that we are on the right track. We can feel the high level of unity among everyone every day, both on and off the pitch. Because of this, we firmly believe that we will continue to move forward hand in hand."
Baumgart added, "For me, the most crucial thing from the beginning was that we established a cooperative relationship based on mutual trust and had a clear football philosophy. Union Berlin has always been known for its unity and consistent attitude towards the game, which I greatly appreciate. We have laid a solid foundation and hope to continue to develop and succeed on this basis."
