Manchester United released a statement on Wednesday confirming that Michael Carrick has returned to the first team after a five-year hiatus. The 44-year-old will take over from Ruben Amorim and serve until June 30, 2026.
So far this season, Manchester United have struggled under Amorin's leadership, currently sitting in 6th place in the Premier League with 8 wins, 7 draws and 5 losses after 20 rounds. After Amorin's dismissal, interim manager Darren Fletcher also failed to reverse the decline: under his management, the Red Devils not only suffered two consecutive defeats, but were also eliminated from the FA Cup third round by Brighton 1-2.
With Carrick's arrival, Fletcher is expected to return to manage Manchester United's U18 team. Carrick will join Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Travis Binyen, Jonny Evans, and Craig Mawson to form a new coaching team.
Carrick played for Manchester United for 12 years during his playing career, making 464 appearances, scoring 24 goals and providing 35 assists. He won one Champions League title, five Premier League titles, one Europa League title, one Club World Cup title, one FA Cup title, three League Cup titles and six Community Shield titles with the team.
After retiring in 2018, Carrick immediately joined Manchester United's first team as an assistant coach. He served under both José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and led the team to three consecutive victories as caretaker manager after Solskjaer's dismissal.
In October 2022, Carrick took charge of the first team independently for Middlesbrough for the first time. During his tenure, he led the team to a record of 63 wins, 24 draws, and 49 losses, but was ultimately dismissed after failing to gain promotion to the Premier League.
After completing the signing, Carrick said: "It is an honor to take on the responsibility of managing Manchester United. I know what it takes to succeed here; my focus right now is to help the players reach the standards that this great club expects, and I have full confidence in their abilities."
“I have worked with many players and have been closely following the team’s performance in recent years. I have full confidence in their talent, dedication, and ability to succeed here.”
"There are still many goals to strive for this season, and we are ready to unite the whole team and deliver the wonderful performances that our loyal fans deserve."
Manchester United's director of football, Jason Wilcox, added: "Michael is an excellent manager who knows everything that's needed to win at Manchester United."
“He is ready to lead our talented and determined team through the remainder of the Premier League season. We will also continue to build the club to achieve consistent and lasting success.”
