West Ham United announced on its official website on Wednesday that the club's Spanish head coach Julen Lopetegui has been sacked effective immediately.
According to West Ham United's official statement, with this personnel change, Lopetegui's assistant coaching staff Pablo Sanz, Oscar Carlo, Edu Rubio, fitness coach Borja de Alba and chief data analyst Juan Vicente Penado will also leave the club immediately.
In addition, according to the news brought by Sky Sports' renowned Italian transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, former Ostersund, Swansea City, Brighton and Chelsea English manager Graham Potter, has reached an agreement with the club to become West Ham United's new manager.
It is reported that Porter will sign a short-term contract with West Ham United for a period of 2 and a half years until the summer of 2027.
In fact, as early as the beginning of last month, rumours claiming that West Ham United management had issued an ultimatum to Lopetegui has already been circulating on the Internet. Until the club's recent heavy defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City, which caused the ranking to slip to the edge of the relegation zone, the Hammers finally couldn't bear it anymore and decided to part ways with the former Real Madrid, Sevilla and Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach.
About Julen Lopetegui
The 57-year-old Lopetegui was born in Asteasu, Basque Country, Spain on August 26, 1966. He is 1.85 meters tall. He played as a goalkeeper as a player and played for Real Madrid, Rayo Vallecano and Barcelona.
Lopetegui has previously served as the head coach of Rayo Vallecano, Porto, the Spanish national team, Real Madrid and Sevilla, and successfully led the latter to win the Europa League in 2020.
In November 2022, Lopetegui will succeed Bruno Lage as Wolverhampton Wanderers' head coach.
Although he successfully led the club to avoid relegation, Lopetegui eventually chose to resign in the summer of the following year due to a complete falling out with Wolves over the transfer issues.
After being unemployed for a year, he was appointed as the new West Ham United head coach in the summer of 2024.
During his eight-month stint as the Hammers' head coach, Lopetegui coached a total of 22 games in all competitions for the Premier League powerhouse, achieving only 7 wins, 5 draws and 10 losses, with a win percentage of only 31.38%.
