Liverpool secured a 2-1 away victory against Everton in a key Premier League match of Round 33, thanks to goals from Salah and Van Dijk. Scotland captain Andy Robertson, who will leave the Reds at the end of the season, said he will definitely miss playing in the Merseyside derby with his teammates.
In the 29th minute, Gakopo delivered a diagonal pass into the penalty area, where Salah seized the opportunity and fired a low shot into the net, giving Liverpool a 1-0 lead. In the 54th minute of the second half, Dusbury Hall crossed the ball into the box, and Beto slid in to score, leveling the score at 1-1 for Everton.
In stoppage time of the second half, Szoboszlai took a corner kick, and Van Dijk headed the ball into the net, helping Liverpool regain the lead at 2-1.
Liverpool ultimately secured a 2-1 victory over Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Liverpool defender Andy Robertson said, "I think we played exceptionally well in the first half and completely controlled the game. Even when we conceded a goal, we were still the more dominant and controlled side, and it felt like after we took the lead, it was only a matter of time before we scored the second goal."
“I’ve been here long enough to know the rhythm of the Merseyside derby. Sometimes when you have the upper hand, you get punished. I think that was the case for us. We took a little time to readjust, then kept pressing, and finally scored from a set piece in the final moments of the game. It’s really hard to ask for a better ending.”
In addition, Liverpool goalkeeper Mamadashvili suffered a foot injury after being tackled by Beto while attempting a block, and was therefore replaced by Freddie Woodman.
Praise Freddie Woodman for his outstanding performance
Speaking about the goalkeeper, Robertson said, "I often joke with him, but he's really very professional. He's been incredible since he joined the team. Whether it's Salah wanting to practice penalties an hour after training, Freddie Woodman is always on the pitch with him, or when we do extra runs after a game, I pull him along, and he always does it with everyone. He's always supporting everyone, and people like him are very important to the club."
"He's very popular in the locker room and has a great personality. When he first came to the team, it took him a few weeks to dare to talk to us; I think he was a little nervous. But once he settled in, he really did a fantastic job. Alisson is the best in the world, and hopefully he can return soon. I also hope Mamardashvili's injury isn't too serious. But if either of them is out, we all have complete faith in Freddie Woodman to fill in, and I think he has proven that."
It's worth noting that 32-year-old Robertson will leave Liverpool after this season, where he has played for many years. This also means that this will be Robertson's last Merseyside derby.
Robertson shared, "I have always loved the Merseyside derby. These games were the most exciting and stimulating for me during my nine years at Liverpool. They always got me fired up."
"When I learned that I would be starting, Salah and I talked about it, and we said we should just enjoy it. This is our last derby. We have so many wonderful memories in the Merseyside derby, with many high points and of course a few low points, but not many. It was great to be a part of it, and I will definitely miss this feeling."
