Liverpool announced on their official website on Sunday that Georgia international goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who was injured during the weekend's Merseyside derby against Everton, has been taken to hospital for treatment.
According to Liverpool's official statement, Mamardashvili suffered a deep wound on his left leg after colliding with Everton's Portuguese striker Beto during the latter's goal at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Upon learning of the situation, the team doctor immediately arranged for the player to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher and transported to the hospital for treatment.
Mamardashvili is currently safely in the hospital, awaiting the results of a scan. Doctors will then determine the length of his absence, but it is expected to be short.
During Mamardashvili's absence, English third-choice goalkeeper Freddie Woodman will temporarily fill in as the first-choice goalkeeper, while young goalkeeper Armin Pecsi will be temporarily promoted to the first team as his backup.
Woodman had actually already came on as a substitute in this match, making his Liverpool Premier League debut and keeping a personal clean sheet.
This Merseyside derby against Everton ultimately ended with Liverpool securing a 1-2 away defeat thanks to a stoppage-time goal from the Reds' captain Virgil van Dijk.
Regarding the devastating news of Mamardashvili's injury, head coach Arne Slot said: "Has anything surprised you about the team's injury situation this season?! Perhaps I expected it, because there were two goalkeepers on the bench today, which wouldn't normally happen. Of course, it all depends on the availability of players in other positions."
"Giorgi was taken to the hospital with a serious wound; let's see how he does. Freddy was invaluable; after conceding a goal while the score was 1-1, he stepped up, and the fans were prepared for him, but he performed admirably."
"In that difficult moment, he hesitated about whether to receive the ball, but he remained calm. He put in a tremendous amount of effort for that moment. Normally, third-choice goalkeepers don't get many opportunities, but in a season like ours, if you're playing for Liverpool's U8 team, you should be prepared for your debut because our current situation is simply unbelievable."
Mamardashvili had previously been called upon to fill in after starting goalkeeper, Brazil international Alisson Becker, suffered a serious injury and was sidelined for several months.
During this period, the 25-year-old former Valencia goalkeeper performed admirably, only occasionally receiving criticism for his passing ability not being as strong as Alisson's.
This season, Mamardashvili has made 18 appearances for the Premier League giants in all competitions so far, conceding 29 goals and keeping 4 clean sheets.
