10-man Newcastle United snatched a late 2-1 victory over Manchester United on matchday 29 of the 2025/26 Premier League season at St. James' Park on Wednesday.
In the first half, Mbeumo's follow-up shot flew high and went out of the pitch, Ramsey was sent off for diving, Gordon converted the penalty, and Casemiro scored with a header. In the second half, Gordon missed a close-range half-volley. At the crucial moment, Osula slotted home. Ultimately, 10-man Newcastle United secured a late 2-1 win over Manchester United. After this round of matches, the Magpies sit 12th on the table with 39 points; the Red Devils are currently 3rd with 51 points, but only 3 points ahead of Chelsea and Manchester United. Interim manager Michael Carrick's 11-match unbeaten run has also officially ended.
First Half
In the 42nd minute, Bryan Mbeumo passes horizontally from the right side of the box. Kobbie Mainoo quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass, took a right-footed long shot from the edge of the penalty area, but his shot was spectacularly saved by Aaron Ramsdale.
3 minutes later, Bruno Fernandes made a straight pass down the left flank, and Matheus Cunha quickly followed up, got the ball and dribbled into the left side of the box before volleying with his left foot. His shot was initially saved and cleared off not far away by Ramsdale. After picking up the loose ball, Bryan Mbeumo took a right-footed follow-up shot from the center of the box, but his shot somehow flew high and went out of the pitch. Manchester United missed a golden opportunity to take the lead!
In the first minute of first-half stoppage time, Jacob Ramsey dribbled a few steps with the ball before appearing to be brought down in the penalty area by Senne Lammens. However, after consulting the linesman, Ramsey was shown a red card for diving, forcing Newcastle United to finish the match with 10 men!
3 minutes later, Anthony Gordon dribbled into the left side of the box and was brought down by Fernandes. The referee immediately blew his whistle, awarding Newcastle a penalty! Gordon took the penalty himself and converted with his right foot, giving Newcastle United a 1-0 lead! This was the England international winger's 7th goal in his last 5 matches!
In the 9th minute of first-half stoppage time, Manchester United had a crucial free-kick opportunity. Fernandes took the free-kick from by crossing it into the box from outside the penalty area, where Casemiro headed it into the net. Manchester United levelled the score at 1-1!
At halftime, Newcastle United and Manchester United temporarily enter the break having tied at 1-1.
Second Half
Both teams switched sides as the match conitnued. In the 66th minute, Newcastle won a corner. Sandro Tonali took the corner by crossing it into the box. Gordon quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass, half-volleyed with a right-footed shot from a very close distance in the box, but his shot somehow went wide of the right post. The Magpies missed a golden opportunity to score again!
9 minutes later, Fernandes delivered a diagonal pass into the box from the left wing. Lenny Yoro rose high and attempted with a header in the box, however his effort was saved by Ramsdale.
In the 89th minute, Fernandes made a straight pass from the right wing. After stopping the ball, Joshua Zirkzee turned around and took a right-footed long shot from outside the penalty area, but his shot was spectacularly saved by Ramsdale.
Shortly after, Newcastle launched a deadly quick counter-attack. Kieran Trippier made a straight pass from his own back half. William Osula quickly followed up, got the ball, dribbled and cuts into the right side of the box before volleying the ball that flew into the bottom left corner of the net with a left-footed shot, leaving Lammens helpless. Newcastle United secured a 2-1 victory! Ironically, this Danish international striker had participated in and won a Manchester United youth academy tournament 12 years ago!
The match ended with 10-man Newcastle United securing a 2-1 victory over Manchester United.
