Van Dijk: We can't dwell on disappointment forever.

Liverpool, nicknamed the "Reds," were held to a 1-1 draw by newly promoted Burnley in a key match of the 22nd round of the 2025/26 Premier League season. After taking the lead with a goal from Wirtz, they conceded a second-half goal. Dutch star Virgil van Dijk stated that the team must find a way to turn things around and cannot remain in a state of disappointment.

In the 42nd minute, Ektić received a pass from his teammate and took a shot, but it was blocked by Burnley goalkeeper Dubravka. Jones then dealt with the defense and passed the ball back, and Wirtz scored with a direct shot, giving Liverpool a 1-0 lead.

In the 65th minute of the second half, Florentino Luis played a through ball to Marcus Edwards, who then entered the penalty area and fired a shot into the net, leveling the score at 1-1 for Burnley.

Liverpool were ultimately held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley at Anfield. After four consecutive draws, Liverpool currently sit fourth in the league table with 36 points, just one point ahead of fifth-placed Manchester United.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk said, "We're here to win, especially at home, especially against a team like Burnley. Of course, I don't mean to disrespect them, but we created a lot of chances. So I'm really disappointed, but the problem is, we can't dwell on that disappointment. We have to turn things around, and the next chance is just a few days away."

“I also have a responsibility to the world that supports us and to our fans, and I must keep myself in top form. So I need to recover my physical fitness and prepare mentally. I will do it, which is what I’ve been doing throughout my career, especially during my years at Liverpool. Now it’s time for the next game, and I need to try to perform even better.”

Speaking about the performance against Burnley, Van Dijk said, "What frustrated me was that we started to loosen up after the 60th minute. I don't think this is the first time this has happened, so we have to face this problem. We've already talked about it, but obviously it needs to be emphasized again."

Furthermore, Liverpool will travel to Marseille for their next Champions League match. Currently, Liverpool sits 9th in the Champions League standings with 12 points, so Sloot's team needs to secure even more points to continue their Champions League campaign.

Van Dijk stated, "It's not just because of the playing environment and the atmosphere, but also because we're facing a team coached by De Zerbi, who will make things very difficult for us. We have two games left, and we hope to ensure we don't have to play in the playoffs. If we do end up having to play, then of course we'll accept it. But right now, we still have a chance to advance."

"However, in the atmosphere of the next big match, we must remain focused from the first minute to the last and fight in a hostile arena, which is exactly what we need to be prepared for."
