In the 33rd round of the 2025-26 Premier League season, Liverpool narrowly defeated Everton thanks to a last-minute goal from Van Dijk, but the team's already severe injury crisis was exacerbated once again.
First-choice goalkeeper George Mamardashvili was injured and forced to leave the field in a violent collision in the second half. After the match, head coach Arne Slote reported on the goalkeeper's injury and highly praised the third-choice goalkeeper, Freddie Woodman, who was called up as a substitute.
Regarding Mamardashvili's specific condition, Slot revealed: "He has gone to the hospital. In my opinion, and the team doctor also reported this to me, he has a large open wound. Of course, this will not be a long-term injury. Let's see if he can play next week."
Faced with the unexpected turn of events, substitute Woodman withstood the pressure and successfully guarded the goal. Sloot praised his performance, especially emphasizing the strong mental fortitude he displayed when he came on as a substitute after the team had just been tied and the opponent's morale was high.
“Freddy deserves the utmost praise,” Slott said. “It’s not easy to come on as a substitute when the team has just conceded a goal and the score is 1-1, and the opposing fans are in high spirits, but he did his job very well. He remained calm and held his nerve in a difficult moment when he was hesitant about whether he should come out to receive the ball.”
With both goalkeepers sidelined, Liverpool's squad depth is facing an unprecedented test. Sloot wryly remarked that the unusual presence of two goalkeepers on the bench was simply due to a lack of available options in other positions.
However, Slaughter was also glad that the team had enough depth in the goalkeeper position: "Fortunately, we have three goalkeepers in reserve. Because we usually don't have three full-backs, three number 9s or three left wingers at the same time, and now the injuries happen to be in the position where we have three players in reserve."
“Usually, third-choice goalkeepers don’t get many opportunities to play, but in a season like ours, I think even if you’re playing for Liverpool’s U8 team right now, you should be ready to make your first-team debut at any time because the wave of injuries we’ve been dealing with has been just too incredible.”
