In the recently concluded 33rd round of La Liga, Real Madrid suffered a disappointing 1-1 draw against Real Betis. After the match, Real Madrid manager Álvaro Arbeloa could not hide his frustration and anger at the press conference, directly criticizing the referee.
Arbeloa first expressed strong dissatisfaction with the defensive play that led to his team conceding an equalizer in the final stages of the match. He insisted that Anthony had clearly fouled Real Madrid defender Mendy before the opponent scored.
“Mendy had already gained a favorable position, and in that high-speed confrontation, even a slight tug on the arm from the opponent could have caused him to lose his balance and fall,” Arbelo continued. “This is very basic common sense in the world of football. But the problem is that many people who make decisions now neither understand nor know football.”
Besides protesting the equalizer, Arbeloa was also upset about a missed penalty in the first half. Real Madrid's Brahim had a very dangerous shot when Betis' Ricardo made a clear handball in the penalty area.
In the interview, Arbeloa emphasized: "That was an extremely obvious penalty! The defender's arm was completely outstretched, not close to the body at all. It was a clear foul. If the referee had made that decision decisively, we could have ended the suspense of the game completely in the first half."
Regarding the draw, Arbeloa reiterated the fatal impact of refereeing decisions on the course of the game. He helplessly stated that in such a close and tough match, details determine the outcome. These two highly controversial decisions ultimately cost Real Madrid a draw.
