The Athletic exclusively reported on Thursday that, Manchester City may try to sign Chelsea vice-captain Enzo Fernández if they fail to secure Nottingham Forest's England international defensive midfielder Elliott Anderson this summer.
The report states that with captain Bernardo Silva announcing his departure at the end of the season, strengthening their midfield position has become Manchester City's certainty.
Currently, the Citizens have identified several potential primary targets, with Elliott Anderson being their top priority.
However, with fierce local rivals Manchester United also keen on Anderson, Manchester City are forced to seek alternative options as backup plans. Fernández has emerged as one of the players the club may consider.
It is understood that Fernandez's recent public praise of Madrid "as a city he would love to live in" has been interpreted as a hint that he is considering a move to Real Madrid. This has prompted Manchester City to try and sign him.
Fernández previously signed an eight-year contract with Chelsea when he joined from Benfica, which runs until 2031. However, he seems to be considering leaving due to the club's stagnant progress, and has even encountered obstacles in contract renewal negotiations. This has given Manchester City an opportunity to make a move.
With this rumoured transfer, regardless of whether Manchester City successfully acquires the Nottingham Forest player this summer, Fernández's future will be a major focus of continued observation.
About Enzo Fernández
The 25-year-old Fernández was born on January 17, 2001, in San Martín, Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is 1.78 meters tall and primarily plays as a defensive midfielder, but can also play as an attacking midfielder.
Fernández previously played for River Plate and Benfica before joining Chelsea in January 2023 for a record-breaking €121 million transfer fee.
Since joining the Blues, Fernández has made 163 appearances for the Premier League giants in all competitions, scoring 28 goals and providing 29 assists, where he has won one UEFA Conference League and one FIFA Club World Cup with the club.
