Everton announced on Thursday that they have extended the contract of England centre-back Michael Keane. The new contract extends the original summer expiry date by one year, running until June 30, 2027.
The 33-year-old Keane came through Manchester United's youth academy and made his professional debut for the first team in the English League Cup on October 26, 2011. He then played for Leicester City, Derby County, Blackburn Rovers and Burnley, before transferring to Everton in July 2017 for £30 million.
To date, Keane has made 260 appearances for Everton, scoring 19 goals and providing 10 assists. He has also earned a call-up to the England national team during this period, but has only made 12 appearances.
With the new contract officially signed, Keane will be playing his tenth season at Everton. He said, "I'm very happy. The club means a lot to me. It's easy to say, but it has truly become a part of my life. The club staff, fans, players, and people make me who I am, they're like family to me. I can't imagine life without Everton."
“Personally, I think it’s been a fantastic season. I’ve had a lot of playing time, even more than I expected. I feel like I’ve performed well and enjoyed it. It’s a huge achievement for me to be making my tenth season at Everton. I’m very proud of it.”
"Ten years is a long time, and I've experienced and witnessed many changes here. It's gratifying that we're in a much better position now than before. I'm approaching my tenth season with a very positive attitude. It's exciting to think about the achievements and heights we can reach in the future."
Everton currently sit tenth in the Premier League with 47 points from 13 wins, 8 draws, and 12 losses, just three points behind the sixth-placed European qualification zone. Keane commented, "I think the team has shown the ability to bounce back quickly after losses throughout the season and to unite during the toughest times. There were some games this season where we were missing six, seven, or even eight players, but the lads performed exceptionally well, still managing to win away against strong opponents. Therefore, we need to do that again."
“We have five league games left, and anything is possible. This is a very exciting final stage of the season for us. We must end the season on a strong note and not miss any opportunities.”
"Looking ahead, it's really exciting to be with Everton. If we can go all out at the end of the season and successfully qualify for European competition, this summer will be amazing."
"With our current head coach and squad, we are able to attract more excellent players to join us. This is truly exciting, and I am very happy to be here."
Everton manager David Moyes added: "We are delighted to extend Michael's contract so that he can continue to play for Everton."
“He is an experienced and highly respected member of the team, and he knows what the club expects of us.”
"Michael has been consistent this season, and he will remain an indispensable member of our team next season."
