The Athletic's resident renowned English Nottingham Forest team correspondent Paul Taylor, exclusively reported on Tuesday that the club's Brazilian sporting director, Edu Gaspar, is on the verge of being sacked.
According to Taylor's report, Edu is seen as the culprit behind the disastrous performances of Nottingham Forest and its sister clubs Olympiakos and Rio Ave this season.
To fulfill Edu's ambitious plans, chairman Evangelos Marinakis has done everything possible to meet his demands, including spending huge sums of money in the transfer market for all three clubs. However, almost without exception, the players signed under Edu's plan have underperformed, with some had even left the club.
Taylor added that Nottingham Forest's frequent managerial changes this season are largely attributed to Edu.
He said, Edu had his own philosophy, which frequently led to verbal clashes with the manager and coaching staff. Nuno Espirito Santo, Ange Postecoglou, Sean Dyche, and even current manager Vitor Pereira all experienced this problem.
Nuno Espirito Santo's relationship with Marinakis deteriorated due to this, ultimately resulting in his dismissal and the current legal battle between the two.
This also caused the team to frequently feel lost, leading to confusion among the players regarding the team's tactical system. Over time, this resulted in the team appearing disoriented and directionless on the pitch.
All of this made Edu's position precarious, ultimately leading to his sacking.
If Edu is indeed sacking, it means that the former Brazil international defensive midfielder's tenure at the club since being poached from Arsenal last summer lasted only eight months.
He also stated that, at this stage, Nottingham Forest seems to be emulating Tottenham Hotspur's approach last season, by focusing on winning the UEFA Europa League.
However, the problem lies in Nottingham Forest's squad depth, which is not as strong as Tottenham's. Given Spurs' current relegation battle struggles, this facade of resilience — having a seemingly invincible but internally rotten team— is unwise.
Winning the Europa League is important, but securing their Premier League status and undergoing a complete overhaul in the coming years should be Nottingham Forest's top priority.
Therefore, Taylor believes Nottingham Forest can sacrifice their Europa League campaign to maximize their chances of avoiding relegation in the Premier League.
