Virgil van Dijk says Liverpool will continue to aim for the title after advancing to the FA Cup quarterfinals.

Liverpool, nicknamed the "Reds," defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 in the fifth round of the 2025/26 FA Cup, thanks to goals from Robertson, Salah, and Jones. Virgil van Dijk, in an interview, stated that setbacks are a necessary part of the team's growth and that they will continue to aim for championships.

In the 51st minute of the second half, Robertson received a cross from Jones near the edge of the penalty area and fired a long-range shot into the net, giving Liverpool a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later, Robertson assisted Salah to score, making the score 2-0.

In the 74th minute, Liverpool's passing combination was cleared, and Jones regained possession before unleashing a long-range shot from the edge of the penalty area to extend Liverpool's lead to 3-0 against Wolves. In second-half stoppage time, Sam Johnstone kicked off, and Hwang Hee-chan followed up, slotting the ball into the net to pull one back for Wolves, making it 1-3.

Liverpool ultimately defeated Wolves 3-1 at Molineux Stadium to advance to the quarterfinals.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk said: "I think the game against Wolves was very disappointing, especially the last 20 minutes, so we have to make up for it here. The FA Cup has always been very important to us, and it's even more important this season. Hopefully we can continue to move forward, and this was a great victory."

Reflecting on the match, Van Dijk said, "There were a lot of one-on-one opportunities on the flanks, and Ngumoha was really outstanding, making it difficult for the opponent's right wing-back and right center-back for many moments. We kept pressing and then scored the first goal, which changed the game and made it more open. Then we scored the second and third goals, and the game was basically over."

“We see Ngumoha’s ability every day, especially his speed when breaking through one-on-one and attacking opponents. He is a very special talent. He works very hard and is a great young man. We are taking care of him. We will continue to communicate with him. He needs to continue to learn and absorb experience and integrate it into his growth process.”

In addition, Van Dijk said, "Winning the championship has always been our goal. I am very fortunate to have experienced so many wonderful nights and won trophies at this great club, which is what we have always been pursuing. However, this season has indeed been very difficult for many reasons. I said from the beginning of the season that it would be a very tough season."

“But we are still in the competition and have made some progress. Of course, sometimes our performance is not ideal, which is part of our growth process. Just like the game against Wolves here, we played well and won the game, and now we need to prepare for the next game.”
