The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) announced on its official website on Sunday that it will make a ruling on the controversy surrounding the improper registration of several Indonesia naturalized players in the Eredivisie.
According to the KNVB's official statement, due to a surge in complaints, some of which have even been submitted to the country's Court of Arbitration for Sport, they have requested the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee to deliberate and make a decision as soon as possible.
While the statement did not specify the exact ruling, it is believed that any decision will have a significant impact on the final standings of the Eredivisie table this season and will likely trigger major ripple effects in the future.
ESPN Netherlands added that the KNVB may automatically revoke the registration and slots of those Indonesia naturalized players who violated the rules, and may even impose hefty fines on the offending clubs. Those with serious offenses may also face administrative relegation.
Furthermore, the report also indicated that these players may also face action from the Dutch government.
The Dutch constitution stipulates that citizens over the age of 18 are not permitted to hold multiple nationalities unless they possess citizenship of a non-UN member state, a legal right of political asylum granted by the government, or a special exception permitted by the government (except for those simultaneously holding citizenship of a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (Aruba, Sint Martín, Curaçao, Suriname) or legal residency in a Caribbean special municipality (Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba).
The controversy surrounding the improper registration of several Dutch-born Indonesia naturalized players in the Eredivisie is not a recent phenomenon. In fact, since the 2024/25 season, several clubs have filed complaints with the Dutch Football Association regarding this issue.
According to the complaints, Willem II, Go Ahead Eagles, and relegated ADO Den Haag are the clubs most frequently reported for violations.
Utrecht, in particular, has repeatedly complained about Go Ahead Eagles' possession of these illegally registered Indonesia internationals. The phenomenon intensified after the latter also successfully gained qualification to the UEFA Europa League this season.
The crucial role played by Go Ahead Eagles' star player Dean James in the team's success only added to Utrecht's frustration.
However, every complaint from Utrecht was met with silence from the KNVB. Their complaint earlier this year was even dismissed by the authorities with the excuse of "no reason found."
Furthermore, dissatisfied with the rulings, a Utrecht spokesperson recently condemned the authorities' inaction and announced that they had formally filed a complaint with the local Court of Arbitration for Sport, finally prompting the KNVB to change its perfunctory attitude.
Since 2020, the Indonesian Football Association (PSI) has been massively naturalizing players born in European countries such as the Netherlands, the UK, and Spain, who possess ancestry from the country.
Perhaps influenced by neighboring Football Association Malaysia (FAM), since late 2023, Go Ahead Eagles have naturalized nearly 15 to 20 players born in the Netherlands. Recently, the country's national team squad has been almost entirely composed of these Dutch-born players.
