Augsburg midfielder Reichbezaj will return to Wolfsburg as a free agent this summer on a four-year contract.

Wolfsburg confirmed on Wednesday that Augsburg midfielder Elvis Rechbezaj will return as a free agent this summer. The two sides signed a four-year contract, valid until June 30, 2030.

Reichbetzaj, 28, was born in Prizlen, Kosovo, and officially joined Wolfsburg's youth academy in 2010. He made his professional debut for Wolfsburg on January 28, 2018, and has since made 32 appearances for the first team.

In July 2020, Rechbezai transferred from Wolfsburg to Augsburg for €1.7 million. To date, he has made 117 appearances for Augsburg, scoring 6 goals and providing 2 assists.

Returning to his old stomping grounds after six years, Reichbezaj's joy was palpable. In a statement, he said: "Returning to Wolfsburg means a lot to me. I grew up in Wolfsburg and started my Bundesliga career here. I will always be grateful for that. That's why when the doors of Wolfsburg opened to me again, I immediately knew I wanted to come back. But one thing is also clear: I will give my all for Augsburg until the very last matchday."

Wolfsburg's sporting director, Piermin Schwegler, also spoke highly of the signing: "Elvis's return means we've welcomed back a player with strong ties to the club and the city of Wolfsburg. We are delighted that he chose to return during a low point for Wolfsburg. Beyond his skills, he displays a strong personality both on and off the field. He gives his all whenever he's on the pitch and is willing to take responsibility. We believe Elvis's qualities will benefit the team. We are also very much looking forward to his return this summer."

Wolfsburg currently sits second-to-last in the Bundesliga with 24 points from 6 wins, 6 draws, and 18 losses, two points away from the relegation zone. If they fail to secure points in their remaining four league matches, they risk relegation to the 2. Bundesliga next season.
