Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed at a pre-match press conference on Friday that he will leave the club at the end of the season after his contract expires.
Glasner said he had actually informed chairman Steve Parish of his decision not to renew his contract back in October, and the two agreed to keep the decision a secret for as long as possible. However, as time went on, he felt it was time to announce the news so that the club, fans, and players could prepare in advance.
Glasner said: “I made the decision a few months ago. During the international break in October, I met with Steve Parish and we had a very long conversation. I told him I wouldn’t be renewing my contract.”
“At the time, we agreed it was best to keep it a secret. Ideally, for three months. I told the team today because I think it’s important to be clear now.”
“We had a very busy schedule at the time, so we didn’t want to talk about it. Steve and I wanted everything to go well for Crystal Palace. I told Steve I was just looking for a new challenge. I told him that back in October, and it had nothing to do with transfer plans. I hate rumors, so it’s really hard to keep quiet. We have a good relationship, and we’ve been discussing what’s best for Crystal Palace.”
“I have spoken with Steve. I originally wanted to announce my departure before the transfer window opened because there were rumors that influenced my decision, but we ultimately felt the timing wasn't right, and signing Brennan Johnson early in the transfer window was a very successful signing for the club."
"Then, considering the tight schedule, I didn't want to do it after winning five straight games, because you might lose one, and I know why you lose. I felt this was a good time, perhaps to help the team turn things around and start winning. This is the best thing we can do for Crystal Palace."
Regarding rumours that he had been in contact with several big clubs, Glasner strongly denied this, reiterating that his focus remained on doing his best for Crystal Palace before leaving, in order to secure another trophy.
Glasner denied the rumours, saying, "I haven't spoken to any other clubs. I told the players this, and today I promised them I would do everything in my power to make it Crystal Palace's best season in history. We're four points ahead of the start of the season, and we'll do everything we can to bring another trophy back to Selhurst Park."
"Today we had the UEFA Conference League draw, and we'll be playing Mostar Zrjinski from Bosnia and Herzegovina in the play-offs. I looked at the draw results, and it's interesting to see who our group opponents are. I will do everything I can to help the club bring a trophy back to Selhurst Park."
It's worth mentioning that Glasner is the second person to confirm his departure from Crystal Palace on the same day.
Hours earlier that day, the club's captain, England international center-back Marc Guehi, was also confirmed to be joining Manchester City for £20 million.
